Rental realm: Regional crane service companies broaden their territories

Recent observations propose that regional crane rental companies have expanded their realm and branched out beyond their traditional market. Whether it is geographical expansion or improving and increasing services provided, Frank Bardonaro the General Manager of AmQuip Corp., Bensalem, Pa agrees with this current trend.

Q: How have you expanded from your traditional rental market?

A: We have had to expand geographically into hot spots in order to keep our cranes busy. When cranes purchased for regional projects have wrapped up, we've had to move into areas where new crane projects are under way. In the past six months, we've opened up new offices in Washington, D.C.; Richmond, Va.; and Cincinnati, Ohio.

Q: Have you been affected by the current economy?

A: We've been fortunate-our sales are actually up. The reason for our expansion is to accommodate our customers. Rather than saying the crane companies have had to expand, a more accurate description is that our customers have had to expand to new markets in order to keep busy. By their expansion, they have asked us to expand to meet their crane needs.

Q: What else have you been doing differently?

A: We now have a full-time director of safety to increase our company's safety awareness, as well as provide those services to our customers. The biggest culture change in the crane industry has been related to insurance. We are trying to show the insurance companies that we are proactive in providing a safety culture to help manage incident rates and provide a safer environment for our employees.

Q: What is your company's goal for the upcoming year?

A: Our goal as a company is to maintain profitability and to continue on a profitable growth pattern. We also try to provide our customers with state-of-the-art equipment and maintain a high level of customer satisfaction. If we don't take care of our customers, then someone else will.
